Nipsey’s funeral services were aired on BET on March 31 and held at the Staple Center.
The iconic rap star touched many of lives not only through his music but in the community with several different programs. His work included his investment in education by starting his STEM and technology center Vector 90 for African-American youth in the Crenshaw area of L.A., his “Our Opportunity” investment fund to rebuild urban communities nationwide that were neglected in the 2008 recession recovery and a gang violence summit with the LAPD scheduled just days before his death.
Orlando said BET is determined to keep Nipsey’s work and name alive.
“We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change,” Orlando stated. “We are forever grateful, humbled and honored to have experienced his presence and we are invested in doing our part to ensure that the marathon will indeed continue.
“It is an immense honor for us to recognize him with this year’s Humanitarian Award.”
