Friday marked the release of Nas highly anticipated album “The Lost Tapes 2” and Tidal has caught up with the legend for an exclusive interview.
The interview was Livestreamed via Tidal at Nas Brooklyn restaurant Sweet Chick, the legend spoke first on the album and it’s inception nearly 17 years after the first Lost Tapes was released.
Production on the project features some heavy hitters in the game like The Alchemist, Dj Dahi, Dj Kahlil, Dj Toomp, Kanye West, Pharell, Swizz Beatz along with more. One standout producer though would be his collaboration with hip hop legend Pete Rock who Nas said was the producer behind his iconic single, “The World Is Yours,” and says is “one of [his] favorites ever.”
Collaborating with the Goat Nas says that the pressure was on to release something that would do the producer justice.
“I wanted it to be really great,” he said. “I didn’t want to disappoint him—I didn’t want to disappoint myself or the listeners,”
Nas has quite an impressive catalog and for many, it’s a shock to why songs so dope didn’t make it on their respected albums. Despite his best efforts, however, Nas said that in some cases the songs didn’t come out the way he anticipated, and he wasn’t satisfied enough to put them on an album.
“When I didn’t feel like it got to the point where I heard it in my head, I didn’t do nothing with it,” he said.
After much thought, Nas realized much of his unreleased music didn’t have to live up to his standards.
“It don’t have to be like the other records, it just is what it is,” he said. “Holding it back wasn’t doing me no good either way.”
